Dr. Amit Sharma is Group Leader in Senescence Immunology at the Lifespan Research Institute, where his lab is developing immune-based approaches to eliminate senescent cells and treat age-related disease.
In this second segment, Dr. Sharma walks through the cutting-edge therapies his lab is working on; from transplanting healthy NK cells into older individuals, to engineering CAR-NK cells that can precisely target senescent cells. He also compares these immune-based approaches to existing senolytics like dasatinib and quercetin, explaining where each has advantages and limitations.
He also reveals early work on a new small molecule approach targeting a unique vulnerability of senescent cells, their unusual relationship with iron and ferroptosis, and explains how the Lifespan Research Institute moves research from the lab toward the clinic.
🔬 Topics covered:
- Adoptive transfer of NK cells: transplanting healthy immune cells to clear senescence
- CAR-NK cells: engineering immune cells to precisely target senescent cells
- Antibody-based approaches to enhance NK cell killing
- Off-the-shelf NK cell therapies: how close are we?
- How immune approaches compare to senolytics like dasatinib and quercetin
- The senescence heterogeneity problem and why immune cells may solve it
- New small molecule approaches targeting ferroptosis in senescent cells
- How Lifespan Research Institute translates research toward the clinic
